After the AP exam, students used their knowledge to teach students Pre-K through High School-aged about everything from solar electricity, to passive solar heating, to the gyre, reuse, EBMUD,wind power, single-use plastic, endangered species, mining, Tragedy of the Commons, habitat restoration, volcanoes, litterati, global warming...

APES is one of the Advanced Placement Classes offered at Alameda High School. This college level class has an intense work load and is available to motivated students interested in taking rigorous college work while still in high school. Due to the heavy workload and high expectations, each class is given an honor point above a regular college preparatory class.

Students interested in enrolling in Advanced Placement classes must attend an orientation meeting in April, do the summer assignment (meeting in May to receive the assignment), and maintain a high grade point average. Taking the Advanced Placement exam in May is mandatory to receive AP credit. Each AP exam costs $90 (in 2019), but fee reductions are available for low income students.

Students who pass the AP exams can earn either college credit, or placement in higher classes, or both, at thousands of colleges and universities. Students can use AP credit to move into upper level courses in fields of interest, pursue double majors, or gain time to travel abroad. Many Alameda High School students have earned a semester of college credit by means of AP exams.
